What Does Modern Healthcare Coverage Look Like?

When it comes to the topic of accessibility of healthcare coverage everyone agrees there needs to be reform but cannot agree on how or what changes to make. The pandemic shook the globe and demonstrated specifically to Americans what the true cost could
really be for those without health insurance.

The Current System

Here is what you need to know about the structure of modern health insurance coverage in the United States.

- Healthcare coverage companies prior to 2008
could deny individuals due to pre-existing conditions, meaning they would not be able to be insured due to perceived ‘high risk’. The Affordable Care Act extended healthcare coverage to millions of Americans and mandated coverage of those with pre-existing
    conditions.

- Insurance carrier stock prices are up >200% since the inception of ACA. Most, if not all reported quarterly earnings at all-time highs in FY 2020. Health insurance companies profit at least 3-5%, with most of their expenses including
unnecessary overhead like advertising/marketing, executive salaries, and shareholder ROI.

- Most general healthcare coverage plans are the same and offer similar benefits, networks, and price points. They all vary in premiums and deductibles
    limits.

- The cost of healthcare coverage is rising at a minimum rate of 9% per year.

Looking Forward

The future of healthcare coverage is pointed in a global direction. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that a virus discovered on the other side of the globe can travel
and effect the entire world and all of those in it in a matter of weeks. It’s also shown us the importance of ensuring everyone has access to outstanding preventative medical care at a fair price. Since the world is more interconnected than ever,
select carriers even host global healthcare coverage for travelers and those working from remote locations. The industry is innovating with the times especially in the United States. These innovations are driving widespread access at lower costs and
provides patients with more possibilities to receive life changing care through advanced technologies, resources, and funding. These items lead to 21 st century advancements in healthcare, and healthcare coverage by extension also needs to modernize.

Data is King

The way healthcare will look like in the future centers around data. Data is constantly being collected in all areas of our lives, and in this instance, it is not being
sold to third parties and you can save money as a result! Carriers like BEAM and Oscar offer wellness programs to their customers centered around incentives for healthy lifestyle choices. Many companies pair incentive programs with fitness trackers
and other innovative technology pieces to gain encrypted, secure, and anonymous data about those enrolled in healthcare coverage and provide discounts based on active lifestyle choices.

Where Technology Fits In

Another way technology has really changed healthcare coverage in the last year is access to remote providers. Some healthcare coverage plans include non-insurance
benefits to reduce claims on your insurance while providing the healthcare needed. Telehealth is one of these type benefits where you are able to speak with a licensed medical professional 24 hours a day seven days a week and if needed can be prescribed
medication. Another similar benefit is work/life care balance where you can speak with a licensed counselor to help you with what is going on in your life 24 hours a day seven days a week. Finally, technology can help by sorting through your insurance
claims, and ensuring everything is correct and you are not overpaying for the healthcare you received. Medical Bill Saver helps ensure that you are not the one in ten insurance claims that is incorrect and will negotiate the bill on your behalf saving
you not only money but time and stress!

Choosing The Best Coverage

As you look at your healthcare coverage options in this globalized marketplace it’s even more important to ensure you make the choice that is right for you
and your team. NAPS360 and MyHealthily created Nap360healthcare.com to help you find what you need in order to make that right choice. This even includes a suite of non-insurance benefits included with every plan, nationally recognized carriers, innovative
products from carriers you’ve never seen before, and a support team to answer your questions.

Schedule a Call

Visit Naps360healthcare.com to schedule a call with a trusted advisor at a date and time that works for you. They will be able to walk you through plan options and
    assist you with enrollment.

5 questions to ensure that your healthcare coverage is working for your small business

Health insurance is a big benefit with a big cost attached to it. The process of picking the
plan is pressure packed, frustrating, overwhelming, and confusing. The result for all your
troubles: an overpriced plan that you and your employees don’t really understand.

At this moment, you may be thinking one of two things: “oh my gosh, this is me!” or “wow, I’m
so glad I chose NAPS360Healthcare.com as my complete healthcare coverage solution!”. If you
unfortunately feel yourself gravitating to the first thought, your next question should be, “what
should I do now?”. Ask these 5 questions to help ensure that your healthcare coverage is
working for your small business.

1. Do the benefits that the provided plan is offering meet the needs of
your employees?

Investing in your employees’ health and happiness through the benefits your small business
offers is an investment in your human capital. If your employees, that help the company run
every day, are healthy or have the means to maintain their health, then the company is
ultimately healthier, more productive, and more successful. Remember, insurance, like
everything else, is not one size fits all, no matter how much someone will try to sell you on that
dream. You need a certain flexibility of benefits that offers options for employees to customize
their coverage as much as possible to their needs.

2. Do your employees completely understand the full extent of the benefits that are
offered to them?

We all can recall a situation when we were confused and overwhelmed about a foreign
concept. Chances are you were extremely frustrated especially if there was a deadline
involved. This is a natural emotion, but it should not be the norm when buying healthcare
coverage for you and your employees. Let’s be honest, health insurance will not be the most
exciting purchase you ever make, but it will be one of the most important ones. An easy to use
and understand digital platform makes research easy and confusion over insurance a thing of
the past. Make sure that your employees understand what is being offered so they can use
their benefits to the full extent and make informed decisions. No one likes surprises when it
comes to their money or their health.

3. Does your healthcare coverage have strict in network restrictions?

Many health insurance plans restrict how and when you can obtain care. In some instances,
you cannot see the doctor of your choosing without jumping through hoops. This can be very
stressful especially when it comes to healthcare coverage for a small business. A small,
restrictive network poses more limitations than ever before. Before committing to a health
insurance plan for your small business, make sure that the network meets the needs of your employees, or better yet, do away with in and out of network constraints altogether and find a
plan that offers quality coverage anywhere. As a member of NAPS, you have
NAPS360Healthcare.com on your side to help you find these types of options.

4. Does your coverage include a team to help you save on your
healthcare expenses?

Healthcare coverage is an extremely important decision to make. To appropriately evaluate
which plan is right for you, there are a few early steps that are essential to making sure the plan
you select is the right fit for you and your employees. Luckily for you, we already talked about
the importance of understanding your personal healthcare needs and imploring your
employees to do the same. Next you should look to find an insurance expert that is in your
corner, that will offer you unbiased advice, education, and ongoing support throughout the
year. As an employer you want to ensure you aren’t overextended by providing the best
benefits for your company. Trust the plan and program that steps in and makes sure you are
getting the best bang for your buck.

5. Do you have accessibility to telemedicine with your current plan?

Telemedicine is a foundational piece of what healthcare coverage will look like in the future.
After the crazy year we have all had, everything is virtual. Why not see a physician virtually as
well? You may even have access to telemedicine physicians and not even know it! That’s why
having someone to show you how to use it is imperative. Telemedicine offers quality healthcare
24/7 at just the click of a button. It is convenient and accessible, sometimes without the large
cost attached to a single office visit. You can even get access to extended specialist and
referring physician services. Stick with the times and make sure that your health insurance
provider is giving you the most up to date benefits to save on your healthcare costs while
reducing your insurance claims.

As you move through life, it is important to always ask questions. Questions further
understanding, understanding motivates action, and informed action achieves success. Ask the
right questions and save on your health insurance today. It is never acceptable to settle for less,
especially when it involves you and your family’s health! To learn more about how you can
benefit from your membership benefits, check out NAPS360healthcare.com.

What is your Healthcare Coverage Strategy?

Healthcare is probably one the most expensive line items on your balance sheet. For decades now, small
businesses have been conditioned to look at health insurance in 12-month intervals, instead of with a
long-term strategical lens. What if there was a way to look at health insurance as a vehicle to sustainably
lower long term operational costs?

Most employers have a strategy for growth, a strategy for sales, a strategy for their workers
comp/business insurance and everything in between but not health insurance. Large companies have
the resources and infrastructure on their side to help control healthcare costs. They also have carriers
and brokers at the ready offering them preferential treatment. All while small businesses question if
they can even afford to offer health insurance.

As a small business, it's understandable that you have not had the time or the resources to dedicate to
establishing and adhering to a strategy to lower your healthcare costs. Luckily through NAPS, you now
have the tools and the expertise to do so! The question isn’t how do I pay the lowest amount over the
next 12 months but what do I do to consistently lower my long-term costs in the coming years.

One way to start lowering healthcare coverage cost is by looking at plan options like level funding. Level
Funding is an out of the box risk financing vehicle that is a steppingstone between fully insured and self-
insured options. Level funded plans typically include three main components: administrative costs,
individual/aggregate stop loss coverage, and claims. (We know this sounds confusing; we promise to
explain.)

Level Funded plans give small businesses the freedom and autonomy of self-insurance with the financial
protection of a fully insured plan. The company funds their small claims to the carrier monthly at their
maximum liability. If the insured exceeds that maximum, then the carrier steps in and covers the
payments. This is known as your ‘stop loss’.

At year end, the carrier does an audit of the insured’s incurred small claims vs the amount that was
funded throughout the year to see if there is a surplus or deficit. If there is a surplus the employer can
receive some of the unused claim funds back! A team of proactive experts, a bundle of supplemental
tools, and employee educational content throughout the year can help you adhere to your strategy and
see potential return of claim funds.

Level funded plans deliver several benefits for small employers: Cost savings, plan design flexibility, less
red tape bureaucracy, lower health insurance taxes (employer facing) and access to claims data. How
can this help me realize the strategy I need?

Claims are basically the holy grail to determine whether your insurance carrier is profiting off your
employees or whether you are costing them money. This is why most carriers refuse to share this
information if you are a small business. When you have access to your claims, it makes creating a
healthcare coverage strategy simple.

Level Funded plans offer flexibility that is unmatched by its fully insured counterparts. There are less
restrictions on what an employer can do with a level funded plan, offering you flexibility with plan
designs. By having more freedom with a Level Funded option, you are more likely to have plan
continuity year to year which would not restrict access to care for your employees. Furthermore, by funding your claims in small increments (without paying the fully insured overhead of an insurance
carrier), you get increased flexibility with improved cash flows throughout the year. If those things
weren’t enough, level funded plans also allow employers to lower their state health insurance taxes!

If you are a small business and are tired of the cookie cutter overpriced fully insured options, level
funding could fit your needs. As an NAPS member you have exclusive access to NAPS360Healthcare.com
where you can learn more about your healthcare coverage options and speak with a licensed consultant
to see if level funding could help you build the right healthcare coverage strategy.

5 Reasons to Offer Your Small Business Health Insurance Benefits

One of the biggest dilemmas facing small business owners today is whether to offer health
insurance as an employee benefit. Each year, small businesses are faced with the task of weighing the pros and cons of offering group health insurance to their employees and themselves. “I guess because of the pandemic I have to offer insurance.” “Will
this help my business?” “Can I afford to offer these benefits?” “How will this affect my bottom line?” “I don’t know anything about insurance, how would I answer my employees' questions?”

We wanted to highlight some of the reasons why health
insurance is a must-have offering for every employer, no matter the size.

1.) Improved Hiring and Recruiting

- A recent survey of small businesses across the United States found that 66% of employers offering health
insurance benefits to their employees did so to hire and retain the best employees. The data on the employee end is even more drastic.

- According to a 2017 survey from Lending Tree found that 33% of people have turned down a job offer due
to lack of employee benefits.

- Finally, and most notably, a survey in 2016 from Fractl published in the Harvard Business Review noted that 88% of respondents would be more likely to take a lower paying job if health insurance were offered.

- A 2018 survey from Willis Towers Watson showed that 46% of respondents cited health insurance as a key consideration in choosing their current employer.

With only 55% of US based companies with less than 100 employees offering health
insurance, providing an attractive benefit to potential talent is a way to set you apart from the rest of the pack. In a small business, one employee represents a substantial percentage of your overall team. Being able to attract the right employees can
be the difference in a success story and an ultimate disaster. This is even more true in the post-pandemic era where small businesses need to pull out all the stops to attract top talent.

2.) Better Employee Retention

With all the challenges of finding and hiring the right employees comes the challenges of keeping them on board. Dealing with both the direct and indirect turnover costs are a burden for any company let alone a small business. The direct cost of finding,
onboarding, hiring, and training a new employee exacerbates the indirect costs of lost productivity, gaps in customer service, not achieving your businesses core competencies, or any adverse effects on company culture. Some studies have been done to quantify
the actual cost of employee turnover, with one study concluding that the average business spends 21% of an employee’s salary to replace him or her.

- 56% of employers who were offered health insurance through their current employer answered
that their coverage was a deciding factor in their decision to stay with their company. Given the importance of employee retention on small businesses, the ability to offer health insurance is paramount as it provides a stickiness to employees and mitigates
the possibility of turnover becoming an issue to overcome. (On top of the endless issues you must deal with as a small business owner.)

3.) Tax Incentives

Most often, the largest driving factor keeping employers
from offering health insurance benefits are the premium costs. Many businesses, especially smaller ones, worry that the price tag of offering coverage to their employees may break the bank. Thankfully, tax incentives can help small businesses weather
the burden of those costs. There are a few diverse ways employers can receive tax benefits by contributing to group health insurance:

-In most cases, premiums paid by businesses for employee coverage are 100% tax deductible.

- The
contributions you make to employees’ small group health insurance benefits are tax- exempt, according to the Employer's Tax Guide to Fringe Benefits from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This means those costs are declared for informational purposes
only and are not part of any tax calculations for your business: they are not subject to federal income tax withholding, social security, Medicare, federal unemployment (FUTA) tax, and are not reported on Form W-2. Taking advantage of this incentive is
particularly valuable — it can lower your tax payments, or in some cases even eliminate them completely.

- Section 125 or sometimes Premium Only Plans (POP) allow employees to enroll in coverages and pay for these benefits pretax. Here’s how
it works: The dollars you commit toward employees’, their spouses’ and dependents’ premiums are an obvious financial plus for them, but are not considered ‘wages’ by the government, and therefore aren’t taxed the same way, for example on their paycheck.

- Contributions you make to employees’ Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). A type of pre-tax savings account, HSAs can be used when paired with a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). In general, contributions to an employee’s HSA are a deductible business
expense for your company. Those contributions can also be excluded from an employee's income, and are not subject to Social Security, Medicare, or federal income taxes.

4.) Wellness and employee culture

Employee culture and wellness
is a top priority when thinking about whether to offer benefits (and what kind). Too many employers think about the insurance plan itself, and not anything indirectly related. For instance, many insurance plans do come with supplemental wellness initiatives
that can also be used as a tool to incentivize good health habits. It could also be a great tool to continue to foster a family like culture within the businesses. By taking an interest in supporting employees’ health, they are more likely to be more
productive, stay employed there longer, and rave about how awesome they are treated as employees.

5.) Operational Costs

It is a best kept secret that health insurance can be an operational cost that YOU can control. As an NAPS member you have NAPS360Healthcare.com and their advisors to help you learn how to take back control
of your Healthcare while freeing up resources to distribute elsewhere in your business.

5 Ways to Save on Healthcare Outside Monthly Premiums

Healthcare coverage can be confusing! There are thousands of plan options, codes and laws that seem to change every year. We are here to help you through the confusion with some simple ways to save on your healthcare expenses outside your monthly premium.
(Fun Fact: one of these tips, could even help your premium go down at renewal.) First things first, you are one of the lucky ones, somewhere near 31 million Americans do not have healthcare coverage. Now, what can you do to ease your expenses when
    it comes to healthcare needs?

1. Understand your coverage: Your healthcare plan is full of documents; the summary plan description (SPD) is the one to focus on. The SPD is a detailed guide to the benefits provided and how the plan works. It is also required to be given
to you for free as an enrollee in healthcare coverage. Another option is to speak with a health advocate. A health advocate will help you process all your healthcare coverage related needs. This includes going over the plan, explaining
benefits, and helping find a provider if needed. Some plans include a healthcare advocate.

2. Reduce Claims: This is a simple idea in theory, the fewer claims you incur throughout the plan year, the less you are spending out of pocket on co-pays. Reducing your number of claims can also reduce the increase of premiums year over
year, helping you save more in the long term as well.

To reduce your claims means you visit the doctor less, but what if you need to see a provider? This is where telehealth benefits are helpful. Most insurance plans include telehealth service but using it still requires a co-pay and can
incur a claim! If you need to speak with a medical provider, there are some telehealth plans like those that are part of Prosper Benefits which have $0 co-pay and does not show up as a claim.

There are even benefits where you can speak to not only a physician, but also a counselor and a veterinarian twenty four hours a day seven days a week. These benefits are great to help when it is not an emergency situation, but you need
assistance. Keep these types of benefits in mind when looking at your plan options.

3. Prescription Savings: Most plans offer prescription coverage, but what if you were able to save more through a third party app than with your insurance? Well, oftentimes that is the case. It may not always be less than with insurance,
but it doesn’t hurt anyone to find out, so be sure to check out the Prosper Benefits prescription plan to see potential savings!

4. Negotiate medical bills: Did you know that you can negotiate a medical bill?! Once a final bill from a provider is received you can call and discuss the expenses, set-up a payment plan, and many times with enough effort receive a discount.
The key is knowing where to negotiate. Prosper Benefits includes Medical Bill Consultants that negotiate lower cost bills all the time.

5. Plan with an HSA: If you have a high deductible healthcare plan (HDHP) you can start a Health Savings Account (HSA). An HSA is a tax-advantaged account, owned by an individual, with contributions made to the account by the individual or their employer. Contributions are limited to a yearly maximum. An HSA can help you prepare
    for those unforeseen healthcare expenses.

Knowing these 5 tips will help you save on your healthcare coverage in the short term by lowering claim dollars spent (out of pocket costs) and in the long term, come renewal time. As a NAPS member if you have any questions about your options NAPS360Healthcare.com
is here to assist. NAPS360Healthcare.com includes options like Prosper Benefits which empowers you to make responsible decisions, giving you control of your healthcare.

December 23, 2021 UPDATES

U.S. OSHA – New & Updated ETS FAQs. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration updated its FAQs about the vaccine-or-test emergency temporary
standard (ETS). The text of questions 6.J and 6.K was updated to address the use of over-the-counter OTC tests to satisfy the testing standard. In addition, a series of new FAQs were added as questions 6.Q through 6.X, addressing the following
        issues:

6.Q. Do over-the-counter (OTC) tests that feature digital reporting of date and time stamped results need to be observed by the employer or an authorized telehealth proctor?

6.R. Will a single over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 test satisfy the weekly testing requirement of the ETS even for an OTC test that requires completion of more than one test (serial testing) per the Emergency Use Authorization?

6.S. Is a self-administered and self-read COVID-19 test acceptable under the ETS if an employee submits a photograph of the test results to their employer after?

6.T. Can an employer or authorized telehealth proctor observe more than one over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 test at the same time?

6.U. Will retroactive review of videos made by employees self-administering and self-reading COVID-19 tests meet the requirements for employer or authorized telehealth proctor observation?

6.V. May employers remotely observe the self-administration of over-the-counter (OTC) tests via a live streaming video conference program, such as Zoom, Skype, or Microsoft Teams?

6.W. If an employer observes or conducts over-the-counter COVID-19 tests, how should the employer document the results?

6.X. For employees who do not report to a workplace or see a supervisor on a regular basis, how can employees be tested?

Federal Contractor Mandate – Injunction Issued. As reported in news outlets, a federal judge in Florida granted a preliminary injunction sought by the State of Florida, barring enforcement
of the vaccine mandate applicable to federal contractors. The order applies to “any covered contract in Florida.”

Vaccine Mandates – Supreme Court Arguments. News outlets report that the U.S. Supreme
Court will hear oral arguments, on an expedited basis, on January 7, 2022 on both the OSHA vaccine-or-test ETS and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services vaccine mandate for healthcare workers.

December 20, 2021 UPDATES

What Just Happened to the OSHA and Federal Contractor Vaccine Mandates?

On the evening of December 17, 2021, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit dissolved the Fifth Circuit’s stay of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS), which imposes “vaccinate
or test” requirements for private employers. Within two hours, a broad coalition of 26 trade groups filed the first of several emergency appeal applications to the U.S. Supreme Court requesting a stay pending Supreme Court review. OSHA then granted employers
a limited grace period to comply with the ETS’ requirements. In contrast, the same day, the Eleventh Circuit upheld the nationwide injunction against the vaccinate mandate applicable to federal contractors, pending further review. Although this situation
remains fluid, employers subject to the OSHA ETS should consider preparing for compliance on the revised timetable, as should federal contractors with 100 or more employees.

OSHA Vaccine-or-Test Mandate
Shortly after the first petition to the Supreme Court was filed, OSHA announced that it will extend employers’ timeline to comply with the ETS. Per OSHA, employers will now have until January 10 to develop
compliant policies and until February 9 to begin testing programs.

Staffing Agencies
In scenarios in which employees of a staffing agency are placed at a host employer location, only the staffing agency would count these jointly employed workers for purposes of the 100-employee threshold for coverage
under this ETS. The host employer, however, would still be covered by this ETS if it has 100 or more employees in addition to the employees of the staffing agency. On the other hand, if a host employer has 80 permanent employees and 30 temporary employees
supplied by a staffing agency, the host employer would not count the staffing agency employees for coverage purposes and therefore would not be covered. A host employer may, however, require the staffing agency to ensure that temporary employees comply
with its policy (either be fully vaccinated or tested weekly and wear face coverings).

So Now What?
At the current time of publishing this information from Littler, Littler cannot predict whether the Supreme Court will agree to take up the first Application addressing the OSHA vaccine mandate described above or others
that followed, or grant a stay pending review of the Application.

In any event, while the federal contractor mandate remains stayed, the ETS is not stayed at this time, although OSHA has offered a brief holiday extension of the applicable timelines. Employers may continue to develop COVID-19 programs to
comply with the “vax or test” mandate, including collecting employees’ vaccination status, drafting an ETS policy, putting together a testing protocol, and training employees on relevant processes and policies, with the revised January 10 and February
9 deadlines in view.

When did you join NAPS and how long have you been a member?

I have known of NAPS for many years, and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to join NAPS in 2012, when I started my company.

What have been the biggest benefits you’ve realized come from being a NAPS member?

As a member of NAPS, I’ve done a few Lunch And Learn Presentations, attended various NAPS events, and I was even fortunate enough to be able to speak at one of NAPS’ National Conferences.

What is your involvement with NAPS today?

There are a lot of amazing benefits for being a part of NAPS. I’m someone who always wants to learn more, so the Educational Programs that NAPS offers are invaluable to me. NAPS has also offered me an incredible amount of networking opportunities and
access to a variety of social events. The frequent industry news and updates have also helped me to stay informed.

What would you say to someone considering joining NAPS?

To anyone thinking of joining NAPS, I’d highly recommend doing so. It will help you stand out from your peers and get the training and knowledge needed to bring yourself to the next level. Joining NAPS was one of the first things I did when I started
    my company.

What upcoming plans, initiatives or events are you most excited about in 2021?

As the pandemic appears to be ending, I am really looking forward to returning to the conferences that NAPS hosts and getting back to the social elements of being a NAPS member.

Anything you would like to add that we have not covered?

I am excited to see the economy beginning to recover after the damage done by the Coronavirus pandemic, I am also really happy to see the growth and changes within my niche as the pandemic is now ending.

NAPS MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: VICKERS CHAMBLESS

When did you join NAPS and how long have you been a member?
I honestly don’t remember, but I am sure it was before the invention of the fax machine! I do recall a NAPS affiliated afternoon meeting in Atlanta during
my first 12 months in the business, so that would been in the 80’s.

What have been the biggest benefits you’ve realized come from being a NAPS member?
Talking with other recruiters and listening carefully to trainers. Considering new ideas, approaches, and techniques always renews my curiosity about the people-problem-solving
parts of the job. I like the challenges of being a recruiter.

In the NAPS community so many good ideas bubble up to the surface. Often with one of those ideas, I have challenged and broken through the assumptions that my clients or candidates have let stand in the way of their success. I like to think
that it is usually clients or candidates who benefit from having assumptions challenged, but frankly, most often it is me. NAPS people do that for me. They are biggest benefit to my professional growth.

What is your involvement with NAPS today?
Going to conferences and interacting with other recruiters. I love hearing recruiters talk about breakthroughs with clients, candidates, and themselves. It always involves careful listening, and then
it is often articulating their hazy intangible desire into a practical concrete solution. And finally, professionalism when executing on the plan.

What would you say to someone considering joining NAPS?
If you are going to do this job, join NAPS. Ask questions. Learn from those people who have travelled this recruiting road before you. In truth, I have learned my most important, lasting
lessons in this business from my failures. And I firmly believed that much of whatever success I have had has come from humble admissions of mistakes by those recruiters and trainers who have been willing admit to missteps in order to teach me.

What upcoming plans, initiatives or events are you most excited about in 2021?
Attending any virtual events that I can during this time of difficult travel and talking with those recruiters who have become wonderful friends through the years.
They are the ones who are willing to share their perspectives with me when I get that uneasy feeling that my thinking today is not quite offering me the solution I need. NAPS people are there for me when I need a new idea. Or, as Greg Doersching once
said to me, “Vickers, here is an old idea that you just overlooked!”

Anything you would like to add that we have not covered?
NAPS has made a difference for me. In a commission-based job where success and failure seem just a hair’s width apart, having people in your life who share that same challenging reality
day after day can make all the difference in keeping an optimistic outlook. Our clients and candidates need us to be optimistic. It is most often when they are losing their own optimism that we usually hear from them.

I joined NAPS on 9/11/2001 when I started with McCall Staffing Association! I will never forget that date! I became CPC certified the next May. At first, it was a job requirement but I quickly saw the value and have personally maintained my certification
through education since then. The Certified Personnel Consultant or CPC education keeps me current on employment law in my state and nationally. I started as an employee of a member firm and now almost 20 years later, I have been an independent recruiter
for 11. Jennifer McCall was a board member when I worked with her and she introduced me to this great organization and the wonderful experiences and knowledge that members not only bring but share!

What is your involvement with NAPS today?

I am currently a very active member of NAPS and serve as secretary on the executive board. I work closely with our conference committee, specifically with our vendors. As an organization we want to make sure they are getting the best value and make sure
they know how grateful we are for their support of NAPS. Throughout the year, we are asked for referrals to different products or services and we make sure we are recommending from our conference vendors. It makes it easy to do so when you know the
“real” people behind the product. The NAPS conference not only allows us to see first-hand what the product does, but it allows us to put a name and face to it. Recruiters are natural networkers and there is no place better to network than a NAPS
    Annual Conference.

What have been the biggest benefits you’ve realized come from being a NAPS member?

Education and relationships! I have been certified since 2002, and the education has kept me current and differentiates me from my uncertified colleagues. It is my mission to provide a quality product in an ethical manner. By attending our lunch and learns
along with the annual conference, I am confident that I am current on all new laws well before they go into effect. In 2019 NY (my state) alone had many new initiatives and they were not all standard across the state. You add that to the national
list and we were busy. NAPS had a few legal updates via webinar in addition to our annual update provided at the conference. I am grateful to NAPS and Littler for providing us the access to legal updates. The relationships I have formed through NAPS
are just as valuable. As an independent recruiter, I rely on my colleagues to be my sounding board so to speak. There are times when you face moral or ethical challenges OR just a difficult situation and you need an opinion, I have built a strong
circle of friends I can rely on to guide me. That is not to be confused with “tell me what I want to hear.” They are professionals and provide honest feedback—they are all willing to have the difficult conversations. This year, 2020 has been especially
hard and through it all NAPS and my colleagues have been there for moral support, ideas to weather this storm, collaboration and most of all provided HOPE for the future. Yes, I am talking about people who are my competitors, but in NAPS we are a
community that works together to provide our clients with the most ethical recruiting practices. Our certification depends on this and we hold each other accountable. I am grateful that I can always email, text or call a friend!

What would you say to someone considering joining NAPS?

If you are considering NAPS...DO IT! You will not be disappointed in the value this organization will add. There are so many benefits to being a member. They are all listed on the website or feel free to call me! As I said being part of the NAPS community
means there will always be someone there for you. To name a few there is certification, education, “ask an expert,” the conference, relationships and discounts. I personally love a deal and we are always working to bring more mutually beneficial programs
to the table. I would love to see more collaboration with vendors and hope we can make this happen in the future. You really can’t go wrong with joining NAPS. If you are a recruiter, an owner or a vendor in the industry NAPS is the place to be, get
known, get in the know and thrive!

What upcoming plans, initiatives or events are you most excited about in 2020?

Well normally I would say the NAPS conference as it is the best way to get most of the benefits in one place, but we will have to wait until 2021! See you in Vegas! This year though, we have had webinars to keep us in the loop and the town hall with industry
veterans to help us through this pandemic. The NAPS at-night study group for certifications prep is new in 2020, and it has been a great success. I studied with co-workers on lunch breaks but this takes it to an entirely new level. The group is moderated
by our president, Trinette Cunningham, and any questions can be posed to veteran recruiters or to our legal counsel—another benefit of being a member. I recently took a look at the lunch and learns for the rest of 2020, and there are so many to choose
from and all sound like you will walk away with something to elevate your business. NAPS is continuing to provide programs to educate the membership in a timely manner and provide content that is up to date and needed with current issues.

Anything you would like to add that we have not covered?

For me NAPS is an extension of my company. Working alone can make you feel isolated and disconnected. I have learned more from being part of NAPS than I did when I worked for an established company. My employer was a great recruiter and a wonderful mentor
but times change and if you are isolated and do not change as the environment changes, you will be left behind. NAPS has opened up a whole new world of ideas, processes and procedures. Before I joined NAPS I was not sure how I compared to my colleagues
in the industry. I was not clear on what metrics I should be using. NAPS recently took a survey asking for data from members, then compiled that data to be shared with all members. We are in the process of updating and rolling this out again soon.
I used this data to assess where I was compared to others in the industry, and I used it as motivation to strive for what I want going forward. NAPS is a true community and connects industry colleagues internationally, and the conference brings us
together, for networking, education and fun!

NAPS Member Spotlight: Ryan Scott, CPC

When did you join NAPS and how long have you been a member?
I was originally credentialed by NAPS in 2007 and have been an active participant in conferences, education, and other association offerings as a member since 2013/2014.

What is your involvement with NAPS today?
I have found myself in a very unexpected place with the NAPS community. I have always found value in industry credentialing and continuous learning. In the beginning, I also expected to find value in personally attending conferences or sending employees to learn about new processes, practices, and technologies available, helping to stay ahead of the curve and maintain various competitive advantages. Did that; found value; no surprise.

I have always been somewhat skeptical and distrusting of other people who could be considered competitors, in any context. However, when I began attending conferences regularly, I came to know a few high performing members who I would now consider a part of my inner circle of trusted friends and colleagues. As these relationships developed, I found myself involved with the NAPS Board of Directors, where I presently serve as Chair elect.

As a member of the Board, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with other key influencers, present and past Board members, NAPS team members, and other key stakeholders on the tangent of the industry. From this vantagepoint, I have learned NAPS members, generally speaking, and those who take the time to participate and justify the spend to attend conference in various cities year over year tend to be a cut above the rest. My participation with NAPS has been professionally and personally rewarding for many years.

What have been the biggest benefits you’ve realized as a NAPS member?
A few noteworthy benefits come to mind. While it is hard to comment on NAPS benefits without mentioning education and credentialing, NAPS does it better than anyone else, there is much more value hidden within the NAPS community.

As a business owner, principal consultant, or manager of an organization, the recruiting and staffing industry will undoubtedly present challenges and opportunities. Sometimes the distinction between these is obscure and your greatest opportunities are presented in hard times and dire circumstances. Working through these challenges and opportunities can be very lonely and stressful, especially when making unpopular decisions to improve company performance and better serve the organizations and people who trust you and your firm to find and/or employ the people who make their company possible. I am sure many of our members and prospective members can relate amidst the COVID 19 crisis.

The relationships I have developed as result of my participation with NAPS have been the greatest source of value. Talking through scenarios and sharing ideas with one or two trusted colleagues, who have no stake in your organization, can be valuable when working through challenging situations or big opportunities. I have found value here and I am confident those in my inner circle have empowered one another to advance one another’s overall capabilities, impact, and sphere of influence.

What would you say to someone considering joining NAPS?
You will take from NAPS what you are willing to put in. Everyone receives access to education, credentialing, member discounts, exposure to new technology and tools, etc. However, the greatest value will come from your participation and the relationships you develop along the way.

What upcoming plans, initiatives, or events are you most excited about in 2020?
2020 will be an interesting and challenging year. My thoughts on this question are very different today, in the first week of April, than the first week of March. The COVID 19 crisis has presented a set of unprecedented circumstances nobody expected and for which very few were prepared. In times like this, we see the best and worst of people. The NAPS community includes some of the most resourceful and creative individuals in the world. Since mid-March, I have seen the best of people in unlikely places and many NAPS members coming together, helping one another with ideas, strategies, and reassurance for one another and the companies they serve.

Many of our members find themselves in challenging places today. This hurts my heart; I understand their frustration and the anxiety and fear they may be experiencing, but I am confident they will pull through and find themselves stronger on the other side. This too shall pass, and a very bright future awaits. Our members are resourceful, adaptive, and resilient. They will build mountains of character and solid, sustainable business practices working through this crisis and delivering value to the companies they serve.

I am most excited to see familiar faces at the next conference and for the opportunity to learn about the resourceful, adaptive, and resilient means by which they helped their clients through this crisis and improved their businesses along the way.

How to Stay Connected as an Office During COVID-19

By Mitch Rudolph, Avionté

We’re sure by now you’ve seen no less than 20 or so emails, hundreds of news articles and perhaps thousands of social posts regarding COVID-19 and how businesses plan to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

While no doubt, many of these commutations are extremely important, lifesaving in some cases, this post is different.

Listed below is a collection of learnings and advice that we’ve gathered as a company over the last few weeks that can genuinely help your business embrace the “new normal” and continue doing what we as an industry do best, putting the nation to work.

Getting the Most out of Video

Do you remember how magical it was in the past decade once FaceTime came out? It really turned science fiction into science fact and allowed people to communicate in a whole new, personable way. Fast forward to 2020 and video has advanced significantly. There’s something more meaningful about seeing someone’s face vs. just their voice in a remote office setting.

At Avionté, using video chat vs. phone conversation is not enforced but it is heavily encouraged. Why? It creates a sense of team.

Being able to video chat someone instantly is similar to life back in the office when you could just walk up to a co-worker and ask them a question. Additionally, it adds a sense of professionalism. If you know you might have to be “camera-ready” while working from home, it adds a layer of purpose to your day and comes in handy when a client or boss calls.

Frequent Communication

Our executive team has been fully transparent with what the company is doing and what they are planning on doing with the evolving situation. This helps tremendously keep employees, clients, prospects and partners at ease knowing what’s next. Here’s four communication methods that have been working well:

Opened up an internal chat group – This digital chat group provides the perfect environment for employees to ask questions, seek answers and offer daily doses of encouragement.

Daily email updates – Every weekday, an email is sent out from the executive team, sometimes just the CEO, Karl Florida, with updates, encouragements and a touch of humor to keep employees motivated and informed.

Open digital door policy – While the entire company is working remote, there’s an open digital door policy where employees can easily ask the executive team questions.

Email blast to all clients, prospects, employees and partners – Even though many companies are actively doing this, it’s still important to communication to the broader community what your business is doing about the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out Avionte’s email blast.

Tips for Working from Remote

Working from home is definitely a “new normal” for many people, especially at our office where only a handful of folks BC (Before Coronavirus) worked remotely. To help ease others into the remote work lifestyle, we had our full-time remote employees send in their top tips for working productively from home. Here’s a small collection of their ideas:

Make your home office cozier by adding a plant, candle or placing it near a window with lots of sunshine

Workout before you start your remote day

Get dressed the way you would as if you’re going to the office

Stock up on delicious coffee (any coffee that’s better than the free stuff in the office)

Get into a morning routine

Take frequent short breaks to keep the blood flowing

Humor

In these perilous and uncertain times, humor still remains one of the best medicines when used appropriately. Whether that be memes, light-hearted dad jokes or even poking fun of the situation you’re in, humor is an excellent tool to keep moral high.

Here’s a few family-friendly jokes about the staffing industry for your enjoyment!

2.

3.

Did you know that 3.14% of recruiters prefer pie charts?

We sincerely hope you find some nuggets of use out of this post. We’re living in some hectic times and it’s no doubt easy to feel disheartened. Just remember that we are resilient as an industry and we will get through this together.

It’s All About Automation: Chatbots and Marketing Automation in Recruiting

It’s hard to imagine there was a time when things like navigating, paying bills, shopping, and catching up on the news were done with little or no help from technology as we know it (and not that long ago, really).

But, in just a relatively short span of time, technology has permanently changed so much of how we do nearly everything—and it’s happened so seamlessly and intuitively that we barely notice it at times.

And how we recruit in 2020 is no different.

While the memories of Rolodexes and yellow pages may only just be beginning to fog (for some), recruiting has changed so drastically and so quickly that much of the day-to-day would seem unrecognizable to the earlier versions of ourselves.

The timeless skills like determination, communication, problem-solving, and network will never expire or become outdated, but, today, there are so many new, innovative tools available to the modern recruiter that make their lives easier.

Below, we’ll shed some light on a few of the more prominent trends in recruiting automation that we’ve noticed thus far in 2020.

Chatbots
Robots have been firmly beeping their way into a variety of industries for some time now. But recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) has spawned the new wave of their less physically-dependent offspring: the chatbot.

Finding the perfect candidate has always been the center of the bullseye for recruiters, and manually sifting through and engaging with a multitude of candidates has always been one of the biggest obstacles in the way.

As the foundational technology supporting it has sharply improved in recent years, chatbots are now capable of much more nuanced and sophisticated levels of conversation with users.

Chatbots can free up much of a recruiter’s time by quickly and reliably gathering pertinent information like resumes, contact information, interview availability, and answers to screening questions. Furthermore, these virtual assistants can even rank and categorize candidates based on parameters set by the recruiter.

Even relatively small procedures like these can radically bolster your screening efficiency and capability once they become automated.

And it’s even good news for job seekers: in this candidate-driven market, a faster, smoother, and more efficient candidate experience can be a huge competitive advantage.

(Here’s a link to a great article that reviews the best chatbots for recruiting in 2020 if you’re looking to make a move.)

Email marketing automation
One of the more critical responsibilities for recruiters is maintaining regular or semi-regular engagement with candidates—but it’s also one of the biggest time sinks. And when your ATS swells in size as your business grows, communicating with hundreds of people effectively over time can quickly become overwhelming.

Enter email marketing automation.

When done correctly, email marketing helps recruiters by automating routine, tedious processes and engage with candidates (or clients) at scale.

There is really no shortage of applications; it all depends on your business. But, for just one example, creating an email marketing strategy for candidates you’ve placed out on contract can help promote engagement and keep you at the top of their minds down the road.

You can schedule an email that goes out on the day a candidate starts out on their new engagement, thank them, and provide tips for their first day. You can then send a follow-up in six weeks that checks in to see how things are going and maybe schedule a call or a lunch. And then again in six months asking if they’re reaching the end of their contract and looking for their next opportunity.

And it’s all automatic.

Again, this is just one example, and the strategy will vary depending on your own unique circumstance, but, regardless of your business, there’s likely more than one way you stand to benefit from exploring email marketing automation initiatives.

Recruiting in a New Decade: The Rise of the Softer Skills

Entering the workforce, and recruiting from within it, is vastly different than in years past.

Employers lament about the prevailing skills shortage and the cramp it puts on their hiring efforts—CEOs globally consider the current talent shortage to be the top emerging risk for their companies.

Meanwhile, jobseekers express frustration that the traditional career path of getting an education (or learning a skill), getting a job, and then staying at that job until they retire seems to be vanishing.

Today, when organizations are hard-pressed to find qualified talent and workers are accustomed to upskilling, adapting to emerging technologies, and job-hopping, a certain classification of skills has emerged as the new differentiator: soft skills.

While hardly a new phenomenon, the softer set of skills is getting a larger share of the spotlight and matter more now than ever before.

We’ll cover a few of the more important soft skills in 2020 and explain why they matter.

Key soft skills to look for

Creativity

Perhaps the most evergreen of all soft skills, creativity continually tops the list of most desirable soft skills for organizations across all industries (it’s topped LinkedIn’s top 5 most in-demand soft skills list for back to back years).

Employees who can creatively approach problems and tasks and consistently deliver solutions are incredibly valuable for virtually every business role. Identifying individuals who are intellectually agile can be a bit tricky, though.

Be sure to ask open-ended questions that allow room for candidates to explain past scenarios where they displayed creative problem-solving.

Growth mindset

Business is now conducted during an era of rapid change. New impactful technologies sprout up weekly and assert their effects over a variety of processes. The responsibilities of any given role can change dramatically over the course of a year and workers are forced to scramble to adapt.

An individual that scores high in the “growth mindset” soft skill believes that their talents can be developed through hard work and feedback and are thus well-positioned to rise to the dynamic challenges of the modern workplace.

Conversely, an individual scoring low in this soft skill believes that their talents are set in stone and unchangeable.

Being able to identify a growth mindset skill among candidates can be hugely important for specific roles; ask candidates to share examples of when a role they had in the past changed and how they adapted to it.

Collaboration

For as much as a technically gifted employee can accomplish in their individual role, today organizations are putting an increasing amount of emphasis on one’s ability to collaborate with others.

High-performing teams will always outpace a high-performing individual and companies are beginning to select for individuals who have demonstrated a willingness and ability to work well with others to achieve a common goal.

There’s a reason the maxim “teamwork makes the dream work” has been so well known for so long. No matter how talented a certain candidate may be, if they are difficult to work and struggle to be an effective team member, the workplace will almost certainly suffer.

Take time when evaluating candidates to make sure they express a genuine earnestness to collaborate and be a helpful contributor to a larger team. Ask them to provide examples of successful collaboration at prior roles (or, maybe even more effective, examples of unsuccessful collaboration).

NAPS Member Spotlight: Meredith Mueller Daly

Q: When did you join NAPS and how long have you been a member?
I first became affiliated with NAPS back in 2013, when I was a part of the Georgia chapter, way back when we used to operate in chapters. We have certainly transformed and evolved as the recruiting landscape has over time.

Q: What is your involvement with NAPS today?
I am not only an active member, but I am also on the board of directors. I am heavily involved in workshops and in the annual conference as well. I am hoping to get on a committee focused on certification, as there are several different tracks. I am currently CPC certified. The Certified Personnel Consultants (CPC) certification is the first and oldest certification designated for the recruiting industry. It offers you a terrific education on employment law. It helps individuals establish a very high level of ethics in the industry, which is extremely important.

In order to maintain that high standard of performance for our clients, it’s important that our clients and the recruiting community as a whole know about this certification program. It also requires a certain amount of hours of continuing education each year. It ensures that you are committed to the industry and to your clients - committed to taking care of the candidates you’re working with and providing the best candidate experience.

Q: What have been the biggest benefits you’ve realized come from being a NAPS member?
Professional education and the certification program. Ongoing and continuing educational development is extremely important to me. I’m a lifelong learner and I’m not the kind of person that does anything halfway, so I want to ensure that everything I’m doing is serving my constituents to the best of my ability.

Also... conferences! The education that we receive at the conference is the best in the industry. Period. On top of that, it’s a tremendous opportunity to get to know and partner with some of the top leaders in the industry. It’s small enough in that it’s not an overwhelming presence (compared to others in the industry), but it gives you a very intimate opportunity to get to know people who are just like you with similar goals, business models and understanding what works and how to overcome challenges.

Q: What would you say to someone considering joining NAPS?
I think the first thing I would say is that it is the leading organization in the recruiting industry that will provide you with best-in-class professional education. Also, becoming certified is key to setting yourself apart from those who are not as serious or dedicated to preserving integrity in the industry.

Q: What upcoming plans, initiatives or events are you most excited about in 2020?
What I am very excited about is an upcoming webinar that is hosted by one of our legal partners - “Calls, Texts and Ringless Voicemails—shielding yourself from TCPA Claims.” This topic could be very important and pertinent in regard to cold-calling, which is revolutionizing the way recruiting firms operate. Auto-dials or robocalls. One person had to pay $975,000 because they did not go about it the right way, so the proper education is so paramount and vital to not only business growth, but survival. Since I’m a NAPS member, I don’t have to pay a lawyer to learn all of this pertinent information. Being a member gives you access to the legal minds that are specialized in the employment industry. NAPS gives me everything I need to know when I need to know it. I could not recommend NAPS highly enough!

Why the Joy of Missing Out is essential in leading a balanced life

By Karen Schmidt, Managing Partner of Next Level Exchange

How was January both the longest year ever, and absolutely fly by at the same time? How has your stress level decreased since the holidays – let me guess, it hasn’t! As recruiters, my opinion is that we feel an insane level of stress more often than not.

In fact, for many recruiters, pending deadlines and packed schedules are not overwhelming, but instead serve as a driving force that pushes them toward greater productivity. We have deals to close, goals to achieve, sales incentive trips to earn, financial success to attain, exercise regimes to master, dreams to chase, and people to help and inspire. The “I work best under pressure” mantra environment creates a Catch-22; we get frustrated with ongoing stress, but perform at the highest level of effectiveness and efficiency when under the exact stress we try to escape. I wanted to address this topic to our NAPS audience because I believe that great recruiters are over-achievers by nature and this is something worth reflecting upon. We spend time at conferences, or on Next Level Exchange, discussing ways to keep our businesses healthy but spend very little time (or none at all) focusing on the health of our own selves.

For some, busyness can be reassuring; a feeling of constant forward-motion and accomplishment is much preferred over being stagnant or empty. That reassurance can come with an eventual price – stress, while beneficial in moderate amounts, is harmful in excessive amounts, as are most things. In fact, I think some are even addicted to stress! Heidi Hanna, author of Stressaholic: 5 Steps to Transform Your Relationship with Stress argues that multiple demands on our time and energy have created a neurochemical dependence on stress. By activating the dopamine reward center in the brain that feeds us feel-good endorphins, stress can temporarily boost performance, explaining why some appear to get so much done when under extreme pressure. Just like a drug, the feelings of stress and preoccupation are extremely addictive. The transition between being hyper-busy to more reasonable levels of activity may be a foreign feeling and withdrawal symptoms may come along with it. When one becomes addicted to non-stop thinking, worrying, striving, efforting, achieving, straining and stressing, to allow oneself to be truly relaxed and simply breathe can be an adjustment. It may even feel boring!

So, how do you simplify and balance while still being an amazing recruiter who achieves all you are capable of?

If you are a self-diagnosed “stress junkie”, start by asking yourself a few simple questions to be sure your efforts support your true intentions:

• What is it you really want to accomplish? How does your busyness support your end goals?

• What are the most important elements of your life? Your family? Your health? Your spirituality? How much time and focus are you dedicating each day to those elements?

• Do you control your day, your career, and your life – or do you find those things controlling you?

• What comfort do you find in being stressed? Why is it uncomfortable to be relaxed or reflective?

Okay, so you’ve self-diagnosed. Now what??? One suggestion is to evaluate, and then trim away, all of the non-essentials in your day. What are you involved with out of obligation that could be less frequent or eliminated entirely? How many social networking sites do you really need to update or check, and how often per day? What professional responsibilities could be delegated to others, but stay on your plate because “they’ve always been there”? Eliminating a few non-essential tasks or activities gives you the time and energy to invest in those things that are essential for your balance and wellbeing.

Make a list of all your current important projects that are not urgent, and then assign at least two one-hour slots a week to work on them. If you don’t begin to do some of the strategic work now, when will you? Sometimes we get so busy with the minutiae that we neglect the forward-motion activity required for true progress or change. Usually, the most important things in your life are not necessarily the most urgent. They don't call you on the phone, put deadlines on your calendar, or knock incessantly at your door. They are often quiet - in the background - easy to forget and neglect. Schedule time for those important projects, and then schedule the nonessentials around them.

Consider dejunking your office and living environment. Get rid of physical items you don't need from old magazines and newspapers, to clothes that don't fit, to toys and movies that the kids have outgrown. When what you don't need is out of the way, it takes much less time and energy to find the things you do need. I haven’t watched Marie Kondo’s show because if I truly threw away everything that didn’t “spark joy” for me, I would be sitting on the curb with my dogs and my wine fridge, but perhaps her show would help you with this concept if you can sit through it. And I apologize if I’ve just offended any of you who are Tidying Up junkies, I’m sure it’s an incredible show.

Add activities into your schedule that you enjoy, and be fully present as you're doing them. You may feel you don't have the time, but consider how much extra energy and motivation you receive from pursuing hobbies and gratifications, and how that energy might help you with your regular responsibilities.

Finally, stop trying to be all things to all people! It is okay to say “no”, or to set expectations as to when it is realistic for you to accomplish the task at hand. In today's busy, demanding world, we will likely always have more to do than we can ever get done in a single day. Find joy and fulfillment in small achievements, day by day, and one at a time. Okay, those are my tips for all of us trying to maintain the balance in either our post-new-year frenzy or just our normal daily routines! Thank you for reading, and know that our entire team is here to help improve the health of your recruiting business and the health of your minds and souls!

Why the Candidate Experience Matters More Now than Ever

It’s 2020 and it’s hardly newsworthy to report that the balance of power in recruiting has shifted dramatically from employers to candidates. We operate within a candidate-driven market, established in part by the US unemployment numbers seeming to reach new record lows with each passing month.

While it’s wonderful to think of a country where fewer and fewer people are out of work, this climate makes acquiring talent extremely difficult today.

No longer are candidates falling over themselves to be the first to knock on your door. Today, you have to go knock on theirs—and the odds are, you’re not the only one.

In most industries, this historically tight labor market has made qualified candidates the market’s most rare and valuable commodity. Software developers, for just one example, consider a week in which they’re reached out to by recruiters or hiring managers three separate times as relatively slow.

Because leading candidates have little trouble garnering job offers (even when they’re not looking for them), a new differentiator has emerged that separates the organizations that acquire these candidates from the ones that don’t: the candidate experience.

Over the past several years, candidates have steadily begun to hold more and more cards in the recruiting process. Where once HR departments could luxuriate in a hiring process that could stretch anywhere between 3-6 weeks, new data shows that candidates are rarely willing to wait more than two weeks to receive an offer before they move on.

Good recruiting is now inexorably linked to a good candidate experience marked by communication, convenience, transparency, and expediency. We’ll share some insights and statistics on why this is more important now than ever before below.

What is the Candidate Experience?

You probably already have a good idea about which components make up the overall candidate experience. Still, it’s important to hammer out the details to make sure no stage is being neglected.

The candidate experience includes the entire hiring process from the job search and application to the screening process, interview(s), onboarding, and all of the communication and scheduling in between.

Candidates begin developing an impression about an employer long before they walk through their doors—every touchpoint throughout the hiring process contributes to this perception. And this perception is essential for your recruiting efforts as only 2% of candidates indicate they applied to an organization about which they held a negative impression.

More importantly, even if they do have a positive perception of an organization, 83% of talent say that a negative experience can change their mind about a company they once liked. However, a polished, hassle-free candidate experience can be just as powerful in helping establish a positive impression and attract talent—87% of candidates report a positive candidate experience can change their mind about a company they once doubted.

Coming off the heels of a year in which the number of job openings exceeded the number of unemployed Americans by the largest margin in history, many differentiators like salary, benefits, perks, and company culture have leveled out as employers compete in an arm’s race to entice top talent. All things being equal, the power of a simple, clear, communicative, and timely candidate experience can have a tremendous influence on job seekers.

Regularly evaluating your hiring process and devoting real, meaningful time into developing a personalized candidate experience that engages and informs job seekers every step of the way and isn’t bogged down by unnecessary or complicated steps can be a huge differentiator in today’s ultra-competitive hiring landscape.

HOW CHINA COULD IMPACT THE U.S. SENIOR CARE INDUSTRY

China has ended its controversial one-child policy, and now couples can have two children in the most populated country in the world. However the consequences of this 36-year law are expected to have drastic ramifications on the aging population. China is a country with a culture that prides itself on children respecting and taking care of their parents. China’s aging population is growing, and it’s projected that almost 12% of the population in 2020 will be at least 65 years of age. With a total population of around 1.36 billion, or roughly one-fifth of the earth’s population, it doesn’t take long to see how the numbers will affect aging parents who only have one child.

Some issues at hand are the disproportionate number of males born versus females. TheNational Statistics Bureau reports in 2009, of every 118 males born in China, only 100 females were born. Critics of the one child law attribute this to gender discrimination, which influences widespread female infanticide, and sex selective abortions. Currently there are about 9-Million more boys than girls in China. In this patriarchal nation, the role of caretaker is considered primarily a female position, but with the disproportionate gender gap, it is yet to be seen how Chinese culture will cope when the situation.

Giving it perspective, when a man’s parents both age, care will be needed. How will the child continue to work and take care of two parents? On a culture level, will he be willing and able to embrace this traditionally feminine role in a patriarchal society? Remember an only son would mostly likely have one child himself, so there could be a shortfall in additional family backing. It’s a classic case of too much care and not enough support. What’s more troubling, is it’s likely his wife will be facing the same situation. Whether it’s a man or a women, with very few exceptions, there is a 36-year period of “only childs” that will be hit with an unprecedented generational burden.

The bottom line is China will be facing an increased need for long-term care for their seniors. And there is simply not enough offspring support that is traditionally available to parents. One would expect that the idea of a child taking care of his or her parents, is going to be a much different vision in the coming decades.

What will China do? As a communist country one would expect the government to fund a solution to this upcoming problem. Now more than ever, Assisted Living Facilities, Home Care, Nursing Homes and other companies involved in the senior care industry could be of great need throughout this Asian powerhouse when the parents of the “one-child” generation begins to reach the age of care.

For companies seeking to grow internationally, it makes sense that this would be the time for long-term care industry to branch out more aggressively to the Chinese, and expand their senior care to the far east. The need for more care will be coupled with the need for qualified executives and management to run these facilities. Senior Care Recruiting Firms could begin to play a large role in assisting the Chinese with future long term care issues.

MedBest Healthcare Recruiting Firm CEO Julie Rupenski, has noticed a trend in the Chinese attending more national senior care conferences. Rupenski has been an executive in both the long term healthcare and the recruiting world for over 25 years. Rupenski says she recently spoke with a Chinese businessman who wants to open an Assisted Living Center in the United States. “His plan is to learn the operational aspect of the business and bring that knowledge back to China.” Rupenski also noted a recruiting firm who’s hired an an executive to manage senior care properties in China. “For the first time, I am seeing Chinese companies show interest in how we manage and run our Assisted Living Facilities and Independent Living Communities. They are beginning to show an interest in senior care recruiters.”

Rupenski spent decades in the senior care industry before becoming a recruiter. “It’s imperative to hire an experienced team of executives when you are first developing an ALF. It’s an area of business that Americans are good at, and that’s profitable. It makes sense to want to emulate a successful industry. I believe at the very least, we will see senior care recruiting firms begin to act as consultants to the Chinese. And as the business world continues to grow on an international level, I expect Chinese and American partnerships to develop within Senior Care.”

The story is yet to be told how China will adapt to their growing elderly population with a lack of offspring to assist in senior care. But with this issue on the horizon it makes sense that companies involved in long-term healthcare will see this as a potential opportunity to expand their expertise internationally.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (MAR 4, 2014) – Mez Media Films, the HD Video arm of Mez Media, Inc. presents "Real World Staffing" the first documentary film about the staffing profession. In 2009, Jim wrote the original screenplay for a passion play project entitled "Top Recruiter" where he featured a Mez Media Client and fellow NCASP Board Member, Tiffany Crenshaw, CPC, CEO of Intellect Resources. I was brought on as a consultant and casting director based on my decade of experience in high level executive search as well as being the President of the North Carolina Association of Staffing Professionals at that time. I referred Jim to Brett Mullen, a local Greensboro Cinematographer, with a background from Film School to shoot this project. I had hired Brett a couple of times before for NCASP and was always pleased with his work. Since that time, he's partnered with us on various Mez Media Film projects and his talent is truly remarkable.

So fast forward to 2013. After Jim and I had successfully built Mez Media into the premier digital marketing firm that industry leaders, staffing/recruiting associations, Fortune 500 Firms and many more have hired to build websites, email marketing strategies and of course produce corporate commercial video work, we decided to return to a passion project. While on a plane to the 2012 NAPS Conference, I suggested to him we film, produce and showcase a true documentary film about this profession that has both served us so well financially as well as the rewarding relationships we've nurtured based on integrity, creative work and most important of all, real, factual, documented results.

In May of 2013, we flew to Seattle, WA and in various locations; we filmed Jenifer Lambert and the Terra Staffing Group, a real successful staffing company. As VP of Sales/Marketing, Jenifer has been a driving force behind Terra Staffing Group's success as they have experienced phenomenal double digit growth as well as receiving the illustrious 'Best of Staffing' Award by Inavero and CareerBuilder for three years running. Jenifer was also inducted into the Pinnacle Society for exceptionally high direct-hire billings. Her best year exceeded $750,000 in Cash-In Billings. For the past five years, she's been a notable keynoter and trainer inside our space having spoken at virtually every conference there's been. She also consults and speaks at various in-house sessions and HR Conferences.

When you finish watching our film (running time, 29 minutes) we hope you will get an inside glimpse of what a true staffing/recruiting professional does on a daily basis. We took the liberty of trying not to fool you with fancy camera work, over the top stock footage, and made-up drama, however we felt the content and story is what you deserve to experience. So please enjoy our passion project film.
